Moneyball Will Roll On

Moneyball may have suffered a delay, but the game was not completely called off. Unfortunately, the project will not resume without a few changes to the lineup.
Still playing? Brad Pitt. On the disabled list? Steven Soderbergh.
Production on the sports film was halted late last month, just days before lensing was to begin. Although Columbia Pictures head Amy Pascal had been pleased with earlier versions of the script, a final version drafted by Soderbergh, the movie’s director, was considered a disappointment.
While it was unclear whether the film would go to another studio, or just be scrapped altogether, Sony decided to tap Aaron Sorkin (Sports Night) for another rewrite. Unfortunately, they’ve also chosen to go with a new director as well.
It’s hoped a script will be done by August.

Possible Strikeout for Soderbergh’s Moneyball
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Columbia Pictures, Adaptation, Sports, Filmmaking, Scripts,
It looks like Moneyball may have struck out just days before its planned start.
Although production was set to begin on Monday, Columbia Pictures head Amy Pascal has placed the film in limited turnaround. This means the adaptation of Michael Lewis’ Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game might not be seen at all. Brad Pitt had been committed to play Billy Beane, the real-life baseball player turned Oakland A’s manager. The book told the story of Beane’s use of computer-based analysis - instead of a deep pocket book - to build a competitive baseball team.

Harrison Ford tops Highest Paid Actor List
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Paramount, Box Office, Celeb News, Lists,
Harrison Ford is Hollywood’s highest paid actor after earning $60.37 million over the last 12 months. The 66-year-old star made the staggering sum after starring in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - which took $701 million worldwide at the box office. Ford - who had only appeared in four movies since 2000 before agreeing to reprise the famous role for a fourth time - was paid the figure between June 2008 and June 2009 as part of a deal that saw studio Paramount give the veteran star, director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas a percentage of the film’s earnings.
Other stars to make the list, compiled by business bible Forbes magazine, include Adam Sandler, who came second after raking in $51.38 million, Will Smith, who finished third with $42 million, and fourth placed Eddie Murphy, who earned $37.3 million. Rounding off the top five was Nicolas Cage, who was paid $37 million in the last 12 months. Forbes compiled the list of top earning stars by speaking to agents, managers, producers and lawyers to find out what money stars received upfront for movies in development and earnings from released films. Advertising and other earnings from the last 12 months were also taken into consideration.

Early Reviews for Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Universal, Weinstein Company, Action, Drama, Period, Upcoming Releases,
When a movie is annoyingly difficult to spell (I can never seem to get Inglourious Basterds right on the first try), you know the film’s going to generate mixed emotions. Although the crowds were eager to welcome Brad Pitt and director Quentin Tarantino to the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, the reception to their WWII era film was a bit uneven.
Preview the trailer here then read the early reviews after the jump.

Brad Pitt Asks for Nazi Scalps in Inglourious Basterds Trailer
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Universal, Weinstein Company, Action, Adventure, Drama, Period, Trailers, Upcoming Releases,
Earlier this month, B.J. Novak found it difficult to describe Inglorious Basterds. Let’s see if this teaser trailer can help fill in the blanks.
In the film, Brad Pitt plays Lt. Aldo Raine, the leader of a group of Jewish-American soldiers on a mission to kill Nazis. The movie, which clearly promises to be a bloody one, was directed by none other than Quentin Tarantino.
After previewing the trailer, let us know what you think. Did it do enough to make you overlook Brad’s hideous mustache? Is this the WWII film that will make everyone forget Valkyrie ever existed?
Inglourious Basterds hits theaters on August 21.
B.J. Novak Gets Us Excited for Inglourious Basterds
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Universal, Weinstein Company, Action, Adventure, Drama, Period, Upcoming Releases,
As if the names “Quentin Tarantino” and “Brad Pitt” weren’t already enough for us.
In a recent interview with MTV, B.J. Novak provided an insider’s perspective on Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. (The 29-year-old plays Private First Class Utivich.) Although he admits the WWII-era film is a bit hard to describe, the Office star didn’t have any difficulty heaping praise on one of the “coolest movies” he’s “ever seen or been a part of.”

Box Office Breakdown: New Life for Oscar Contenders
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Family, Horror, Music, Period, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers,
Nominations? Clint Eastwood doesn’t need any stinkin’ nominations…
Although the 78-year-old was recently overlooked by the Academy, the actor/director still got some respect from the paying public. This past weekend, Gran Torino landed softly into third place and, most importantly, topped the actual Best Picture contenders.
But that’s not to say a nomination is pointless. Last week’s #10, Slumdog Millionaire, jumped 5 positions this week after nabbing 10 nods on Thursday. (It also bested Torino’s per screen average.) Meanwhile, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - thanks to 13 nominations - found itself reentering the Top Ten.

2009 Academy Award Nominations
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Awards,
Despite no major wins for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at Jan. 11’s Golden Globes, the film lead all entries at this morning’s Academy Award nominations. The Brad Pitt feature will go into next month’s ceremony with 13 opportunities to walk away with at least one statue. (Slumdog Millionaire will have 10 chances.)
Here are some of the noteworthy mentions from today’s press conference:
- Kate Winslet (The Reader) - a double-winner just a few weeks ago - only received one nomination this morning. Meryl Streep will only get one chance as well for her role in Doubt.
- Although it wasn’t represented at the Globes, Frozen River was recognized several times today.
- Heath Ledger‘s nomination (on the anniversary of his death!) was expected; The Dark Knight‘s omission was a disappointment.
- Four acting nods for Doubt didn’t equate to an honor for the film.
- Several pleasant announcements in the Best Actor/Supporting Actor categories: Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) and Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder). Shannon got the only major nom for his picture.
